Ben Elton rocked the cream of Sussex society when he compered a truly magical evening at Pashley Manor, Ticehurst on 18th July. His outrageously non-PC humour had the audience rolling in the aisles and started the show off running – a baton the cast grasped firmly and delivered spectacularly.

The young cast, directed by Chris Hocking, wowed and enchanted the 500 guests with their vibrant and energetic song and dance routines from hit musicals such as Grease, Les Miserables, High School Musical and Mamma Mia!

The evening, which was sponsored by The Peter Stormonth Darling Charitable Trust and local accountants and tax advisors, Creaseys, raised £61,800 for the hospices serving the people of East Sussex and Brighton & Hove. Organiser and Chairman of the Friends of East Sussex Hospices, Kathy Gore, said “This is a fantastic achievement particularly in the current financial climate. It is though, a drop in the ocean compared to the £33.5 million these hospices need to operate this year. Many are currently facing cutbacks which will inevitably impact the care they can deliver to patients and their families. This wonderful result, however, reflects the massive will to support our local hospices.

On 23rd October The Baroness Cumberlege CBE DL hosted a reception at the House of Lords for the Friends of East Sussex Hospices at which Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham KBE gave a presentation on his recently published review “Our NHS Our Future” which includes for the first time a strategy for end of life care.

Kristiina Parkinson, Commissioner for Community Services, Brighton & Hove PCT (and speaker) Shaun O'Leary, CEO St Catherine's Hospice (and speaker) Kathy Gore, Chairman, Friends of East Sussex Hospices The Rt. Hon. the Baroness Cumberlege CBE DL, Patron, Friends of East Sussex Hospices (by whose kind generosity the reception at the House of Lords was hosted, and speaker) Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (and main speaker) Dr. Peter Greene, Chairman & Non-Executive Director, End of Life Strategy Development Group for East Sussex PCTs and Hastings & Rother NHS PCT (and speaker)

The strategy aims to provide a more joined-up and equal delivery of “death with dignity”. This means making a commitment to increase choice for the elderly and sick at the end of their lives, irrespective of what condition brings them to that point, in order that they can live and die in a place of their choice. We hope that this signals a step change in the management of end of life care.

As Alan Johnson, Health Secretary, said at the launch of this strategy “This (end of life care) has been a relatively low priority and as a result the quality of care has been variable… We need to ensure this is a priority across the country”.

The presentation highlighted the important role played by our hospices in the delivery of end of life care to East Sussex. Cross-party members from both houses with an interest in Health were invited to attend along with health professionals involved in end of life care within East Sussex. It was an excellent forum for this group to share their progressive responses and ideas formulated as a result of Lord Darzi’s review. We hope that the presentation will prove to be a catalyst for translating these ideas into action.

Our hospices specialise in end of life care. We believe that they can work together with health and social service providers to create a more joined-up and equal strategy for end of life care across East Sussex.

We are extremely grateful to Baroness Cumberlege for having made this valuable opportunity available to us.

One of the nation’s favourite cooks and fiery countryside campaigner Clarissa Dickson-Wright came to Ashdown House School in April and, seated in a large, comfortable velvet wing-chair, “spilled the beans” about the cooking and encounters of her very full life in Sussex. Relaxed and obviously at ease in front of a ‘home’ crowd, she gleefully recounted tales of her adventurous and eventful life, regularly throwing in numerous outrageous stories about MPs and celebrities with obvious mischievous delight, to the great enjoyment of the audience. Guests queued at the end of the evening for copies of her recent book “Spilling the Beans”.

The evening raised £5,500 for the Friends of East Sussex Hospices and we are grateful to Robert Taylor, the Headmaster, Martin Stringer, the Bursar, and the Trustees of Ashdown House School for letting us use the school for the event. Before the talk Eifion Davies, the school chef, produced a delicious meal in the school dining room.

Earlier in the evening Cllr. Mrs. Chantal Wilson, Chairman of Wealden District Council, presented the charity with a cheque for £800 which was raised at her Chairman’s Reception.
