A Brief History

1995 The Friends of East Sussex Hospices was formed to raise money to help build the Martlets Hospice in Hove. Its main fundraising event was a Christmas Charity Fair.

1997 Martlets operational - the proceeds from fund-raising were shared amongst the hospices serving the people of East Sussex.

2001 Charity was granted registered charitable status and its charitable objective is to raise money for the hospices that serve the people of East Sussex.

2002 Wealden District Council ran a charitable appeal to honour H.M. The Queen’s golden jubilee with the proceeds going to the Friends of East Sussex Hospices. The Wealden Jubilee Appeal raised £117,000 and also helped to promote the charity within Wealden.

2005 The Pashley Manor Concert raised £74,000. Committee restructured to separate fundraising activity and formalise the position of Trustees, enabling them to take a more strategic approach on the charity’s future.

2006 Following discussion with each of the hospice CEO’s, the distribution criteria was amended to take into account episodes of care. FoESH was chosen by Cllr. Mrs. Pat Kennedy, Chairman of Wealden District Council as her charity of the year. The Pashley Manor Concert raised over £75,000.

2007 Chosen by Cllr. Mrs. Chantal Wilson, Chairman of Wealden District Council as her charity of the year. Ben Elton compèred our third Pashley Manor Concert which raised £55,000.

Fundraising events have included bridge drives, art exhibitions, concerts, wine tastings and a fashion show and the charity now sells its own Christmas cards each year. To date the charity will have distributed £430,000 to the hospices.
