The Friends of East Sussex Hospices
...is a registered charity, run by volunteers, which supports the hospices serving the people of East Sussex by raising funds and promoting awareness of the valuable services they provide.
Hospice care supports people whose illness is no longer thought curable. It provides improved quality of life through expert pain and symptom management as well as a range of other services including practical advice and emotional support. Care is provided free of charge and can be given via home visits and weekly day care, as well as in-patient beds. Many people use all three kinds of care at different stages of an illness. The hospice at home service enables patients to be cared for and to die at home if that is their 'preferred place of care' and also supports families and carers through this difficult time. Each hospice has its own bereavement support, counselling and chaplaincy service and offers care to people of all faiths and none.
Our nine hospices have to raise around £29 million each year in order to continue providing these valuable services. Most hospices in this area receive significantly below the national average in Government funding. This problem is compounded by the fact that East Sussex has the highest percentage of very elderly residents of any county in England. Consequently it also has the highest rate of natural decrease in population (more deaths than births) of any shire county in England in relation to the size of its population.*
If you already support the hospices directly, please continue to do so. We do not wish to detract from their individual fundraising efforts; our aim is to supplement their work and spread the word to a wider public.
